Canon’s Marketing Blurb

The EOS M50 is a compact interchangeable lens camera for aspiring photographers and vloggers looking for an easy way to boost the quality of their photos and videos. With clear, high-resolution 4K UHD 24p video, you can capture the incredible details and cinematic moments of your life at home or wherever your adventures take you.

My Photography Background

In case you didn’t know, I used to be a wedding photographer. Four months out of the year were spent shooting weddings every weekend and editing during the week. In other words, it was almost a full time job, on TOP of my full time job as a marketing coordinator.

The wedding gig required top-performing camera equipment, as you needed to be able to capture those special moments during the ceremony, with no re-dos. For instance, my camera body was a Nikon D3, which at the time had revolutionary low-light performance (ideal for dim-lit wedding reception venues). If you have any familiarity with photography equipment, you’d know that the D3 was a beast of a camera body. In addition, if you needed to add a zoom lens (80-200mm), you better had some upper body strength. That was back in 2010 and camera sensor technology sure has come a LONG way since then.

My Experience with the M50

I eventually sold off all my equipment and lenses, gave up wedding photography and decided to take a break from using DSLRs. Enter the era of mirrorless cameras and their very ergononomic designs. Itching to get back into photography (just for creative reasons this time), the iPhone served as my outlet, but missed the image quality and versatility (ability to shoot video) of a real camera. It wasn’t until I saw a video from Think Media on the Canon M50, that prompted me to get back in the game with an amazingly portable camera.

The flip LCD screen is one of the features that makes it one of the most sought-after cameras for vlogging. For instance, if you are shooting a video of yourself and need to figure out whether or not you are composing the shot correctly, then this camera is for you!

Being able to view the composition in real time, saves a lot of time in re-takes. For instance, that’s how I shot the video below:

My Take

  • Excellent image quality, even in low-light conditions.
  • Electronic viewfinder has come a long way since 2010.
  • It was made for vlogging.
  • Paired with the 22mm pancake lens, it occupies almost as much space as an iPhone.
  • 4K Footage usability is somewhat limited.
  • Battery life is not that great (might need a second pack for long days).
  • Small lens selection for mirrorless.

Conclusion

At the current price (December 6, 2019) of $649.00 + free shipping on Amazon, you can’t go wrong with this piece of kit. In addition, your back and shoulders will thank you for it. The Canon M50 mirrorless camera has re-ignited my passion for photography and I sincerely hope it will do the same for you.
